Betts Trade Leaves Fans Puzzled

The trade that will send Mookie Betts and David Price from Boston to Los Angeles was finalized on Sunday.

After five days of deliberation between Boston, LA, and Minnesota, the original deal that was in place was scrapped in favor for a new deal that involves two separate trades instead of one three-team deal.

Here is a timeline of the overall situation.

February 4th, 2020

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports the deal first.

ESPN Insider Kiley McDaniel reports on full terms of original deals.

McDaniel had a small typo. The pitcher involved on Los Angeles’ end was Kenta* Maeda

February 5th, 2020

A separate trade was then agreed upon between the Dodgers and Angels.


February 6th, 2020

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Red Sox are slow to approve of deal because of pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol’s medical history.

February 9th, 2020

Jeff Passan reports that new deals have been agreed upon.

Rosenthal then announces the separate deal that will be completed along with the Betts deal.

Since the original deal fell apart, so did the Trade between the Angels and Dodgers.

Reaction

The deal(s) were confusing from the start, ultimately the Red Sox ended up getting an extra prospect and a Top 50 prospect instead of Brusdar Graterol who had some medical concerns. There will for sure be retractors and there will also be the people who felt this needed to happen. I guess we’re just going to have to wait and see.
